The proofing steps assume a tool the records barely show
Ziflow's proofing guide, one of this site's winner pages, lays out six steps to faster review and approvals, and every step assumes software built for review: comments pinned to frames, annotations on the picture, a recorded approval at the end. Our directory records the feature lists of 205 editing tools. Searched for the proofing vocabulary, those lists are almost silent, which matches this site's own search traffic: its top queries are people looking for a video review app and a frame by frame video editor.
The proofing census
| Feature term | Tools mentioning it |
|---|---|
| Review | 7 |
| Collaboration | 6 |
| Frame-by-frame playback | 1 |
| Timed comments | 0 |
| Annotation | 0 |
| Approval workflow | 0 |
Compare the creation vocabulary in the same records: 134 tools publish format lists, 56 state a maximum resolution, effects and templates appear everywhere. Editors describe what they make. Review is somebody else's product category, and the feature lists say so.
Why the gap persists
Editing and proofing split because their buyers differ: editors buy creation speed, while review is bought by whoever answers to a client. That is why this blog's earlier comparison scored dedicated review software on five criteria, frame-accurate commenting, version comparison, approvals, security and integrations, instead of expecting the editor to grow them. The census here is the supply side of the same point: of 205 editors, the 7 that mention review at all are the entire overlap between the two categories in our records.
The practical shortlist method
If your work needs proofing, run the steps in reverse. Start from the 7 records that mention review and the dedicated review tools, not from your editor's feature page. Test frame accuracy with a real re-export before paying, because a comment that drifts two seconds is worse than an email. Keep the approval itself inside the review tool, where it is timestamped, not in a chat thread. And when the review unit is a single frame, pull it exactly: the Thumbnail Canvas grabs the frame at full size so the comment is about the picture, not a blurry screenshot of it.
